Using Ping to check Server status

If you wish to use a simple quick check that a server (Intranet or Internet) is accessible then using the ICMP (Ping) protocol is a good solution. The ping command line utility uses this protocol.

SiteVigil builds up a profile of time taken to access a server and will raise an alert if the server takes too long to access or does not respond at all.
