Site Monitoring

Setting access to a web site

Scheduler - Log Configuration

In order for Site Vigil to monitor traffic, referrals, resources, errors or accesses, it needs to read the log files generated by the web server, it does not need to do this just to monitor access to web pages.

There are four site access mechanisms supported by Site Vigil. To access the files using FTP a user account must have been set up by the site administrator. You must enter the user account name and password that Site Vigil can use to access the web site files. The program does not create or modify the log files in any way, it only needs read access to the folder in which the files are kept. Both standard FTP, passive FTP and secure FTP are supported. In most cases the site will permit access only on the standard default ports (21 for FTP and 22 for Secure FTP) if you need to choose a specific port select the 'specific port' option.

Alternatively, and much more efficiently, Site Vigil can access log files directly if you can access them from Windows Explorer. This will normally be the case if you are hosting the web site yourself.

To enter an FTP configuration you must specify a ftp:// access address for the web site, typically this will be followed by your domain name.

To make FTP access more efficient, Site Vigil automatically uses the FTP RESTART download feature if the server supports it. This can dramatically reduce the amount of log file data that needs to be downloaded, if this feature is being used the text (Download Restart Supported) will appear against the FTP option selection.

The Site domain name is the domain name for the site you are monitoring, it is used to distinguish internal and external requests in the log file data. Site Vigil needs to understand your log file format, to do this you must specify a path to a recent log file (you can use the ... button to locate one). Web servers use their own proprietary formats for log files. Site Vigil has a range of predefined formats to match most commonly used systems. If you know the log file format select it from the list, otherwise select the 'Auto detect' format option. When you exit this page press Next Site Vigil will make sure it can access and understand the log format.

If you would like to see a summary of the contents of server folder containing the log files use the View | Summary. If you understand your Server's format and it is not detected by Site Vigil you can create your own log format specifier by using the Advanced button. Site Vigil can automatically keep a local copy of the server's log files. To activate this option click the check box and press Options to select the local folder to receive the log files.

When the configuration has been set up, you can use Apply to confirm that Site Vigil can access the web site and retrieve log file information.
