Site Monitoring

Configuring an address to monitor

Pinging an address

To configure a monitored address you must enter a name for it (this is used in alert messages and should describe the page) and its internet address (e.g. www.silurian.com) or IP address (e.g. 212.168.203.56). The WhoIs button gives details about the owner of the IP address using a WhoIs lookup command.

Individual monitors can be temporarily enabled or disabled, the address is only scanned when 'currently enabled' is selected. The checks are always run in the same order, you can select the order by changing the order of the addresses scanned, you can also choose to only run a check if the previous scan succeeds.

There are two types of basic accessibility checks provided.

The first option Ping sends an ICMP echo (Ping message) and times the delay before an echo response comes back. Some servers do not respond to Ping requests because hackers have used this as an attempted 'denial of service' attack.

Alternatively you can use the Connect option to measure the time taken to set up a connection on a particular port number. No data is sent, as soon as the connection is set up it is brought down again. Once again some sites will not permit this type of connection. Port number 80 is the standard HTTP port.

You need to be running Site Vigil with sufficient privileges to use sockets, under NT/WIn2K or XP this means having administrator privileges.

The maximum access time field allows you to be made aware if an address is taking too long to communicate with. Although SiteVigil can not easily determine why it might take so long (it may be Internet congestion) you will be made aware of possible problems.

Each monitor can have a different way of alerting you of a problem, select the alert scheme to be used from the drop down list.

The final controls all you to select when and how regularly the check should be run, you can select from the existing scheduled timed or press Schedule to enter a specific time.

Information about monitoring is given under the Statistics, Events and Data tabs at the top of the property sheet.

To complete the changing of an existing monitor press OK to save the changes made. Cancel closes the dialog losing any changes you may have made.
